The Truth: Centrifugal Juice Vs. Cold Pressed Juice

The juicing industry is growing fast. We all know that fresh juice isn’t cheap, and with so many options out there, how do you decide where to buy? The truth is that not all juice is created equal and all juices have their pros and cons- so let’s have a chat about different kinds of juice!

There are two main methods that juice companies use to create their juice…

1. Centrifugal juicing

2. Cold Press juicing

Centrifugal Juicing

Centrifugal juicers extract juice from fruit with fast-spinning metal blades that spin against a mesh filter. This separates the juice of the fruit from the fiber of the fruit using centrifugal force.

PROS
-can customize a juice on the spot
-quick production ability
-great for immediate consumption

CONS
-low nutrient retention due to heat from spinning
-must drink immediately. Centrifugal juice can quickly lose it’s nutritious enzymes.

Cold Press Juicing

Cold press juicers are machines that use a hydraulic press to crush and press the fruits and veggies to extract the juice.

PROS
-high nutrient retention
-lasts multiple days
-great for cleansing

CONS
-slower production
-not frequently “made to order”

So basically, you have two awesome forms of juicing that are both great in their own ways. So what’s the point, you might ask? Well, here are some things to keep in mind while you’re juice shopping…
  • Whether you’re shopping at Whole Foods, a local juice bar, or a farmer’s market, ask if the juice is centrifugal or cold pressed.
  • Be ware cups of pre made juice sitting around on ice.
    centrifugal juice can quickly lose it’s nutritious enzymes. If you’re buying centrifugal juice, you want to drink it as soon as it comes out of the juicer or else you might not be getting your money’s worth!
  • This one is important: ONLY CLEANSE WITH COLD PRESSED JUICE. Unless you own a juicer and are making your juices at home right before you drink them, make sure you only purchase COLD PRESSED juice cleanses. Centrifugal juices will not maintain their freshness or their nutrition for the duration of your cleanse and run a higher risk of contamination if not consumed immediately.
  • Now before you think we’re getting down on centrifugal juice, FEAR NOT! If you visit a local juice bar and plan to enjoy your juice within the hour, having your juice made centrifugally is AWESOME! It’s fun to watch the beautiful fresh produce turned into juice right before your eyes. Centrifugal juicing will allow you to have your juice made with the exact ingredients you want, on the spot.

    A few additional ideas to consider:
    Centrifugal juicing creates microscopic shear and frictional heating . It also infuses air which is 20% oxygen. Oxidation from heat and oxygen are the nutrients’ worst enemies. Yes, drink these as soon as possible after production. And also realize that the process itself degrades the integrity of the product. It may be wise to drink extra amounts of centrifugal juice to make up for this loss of nutritional value.

    You can see and TASTE the difference in cold-pressed juices.
